Should Yankees retire #21?

From the Daily News. I personally vote yes.

The die-hard fans all want to see 21 hung up in left field (or wherever they’re hanging in the new Stadium) to recognize the player many feel was the heart and soul of the Joe Torre dynasty. Personally, I wouldn’t have a problem with the Yankees retiring it, though I wouldn’t have any issues with them putting it back into play, either.

O’Neill was a great Yankee, there’s no question about that. But is he on the same level with guys like Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle, etc? I don’t think so. The 1996-2000 Yankees team was a very special one, mostly because it was a TEAM and not one or two outstanding individuals leading the way. You could make a case that O’Neill, Torre, Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, Tino Martinez, Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera should all have their numbers retired, but that would be sheer insanity.
